Students
can live right on campus in the CCS apartment-style residence hall.
Not only will you enjoy the close friendship and support of your residence-mates,
you'll be right next door to your studios and classrooms. Whenever inspiration
strikes, you can get to the studio and bring your concept to life while
it's still fresh.
CCS is at
the heart of Detroit's University Cultural Center, a community of educational
and cultural facilities in a unique urban campus environment. Our across-the-street
neighbor is the Detroit Institute of Arts, the fifth largest fine arts
museum in the United States. Home to Diego Rivera's finest frescoes
("Detroit Industry") and more than 100 galleries filled with
art from ancient to modern times, the DIA is a continual source of inspiration
and reference for CCS students. The Detroit Historical Museum and the
stunning new Museum of African American History are also in direct walking
distance.
As you'll
quickly discover, Detroit is a city filled with cultural standouts -
from the world-renowned Detroit Symphony, to the hilarious, nothing-sacred
Second City comedy troupe, to the melange of festivals that fill Hart
Plaza every summer.
Any art
student will tell you that tearing yourself away from the studio can
be tough. But when you do, you'll find that Detroit is a fun, affordable
place to live. You won't be here long before you're indulging in Pizzapapalis'
famous Greektown pizza, going to $2 Movie Night at the State Theatre,
or finding bargains at the century-old Eastern Market.Weather permitting,
you'll also be expected to uphold the CCS tradition of making
the most unorthodox snow sculptures in the city.
Venturing
just beyond the official boundaries of Detroit, you'll discover the
town of Royal Oak, with its coffeehouses and vintage clothing stores.
Many CCS students also have a fond spot in their hearts for Hamtramck,
an old Polish enclave filled with funky eateries, polka lounges, and
great music clubs like the Motor Lounge and Paycheck's. A short hop
over or under the Detroit River is the Canadian city of Windsor, a favorite
destination for terrific Chinese food.
When you
really need to get away - whether it's to take in a blockbuster exhibition
or just unwind - downtown Toronto or Chicago are both under five hours
away by car or by train. Of course, Detroit is a major league sports
city. Perhaps you've heard something about the Red Wings winning the
1997 and 1998 Stanley Cup?
