PHOTOGRAPHY DPH 111 BLACK AND WHITE PROCESSING PRINCIPLES AND PERCEPTIONS I - LAB and LECture 3.00 Students will develop a thorough understanding of the fundamental processes and principles of black and white photography. Attention is also directed at how photographic perception relates to human perception. This is accomplished through lectures, demonstrations, shooting assignments and critiques. The lab component is integrated to methodically introduce procedures for high quality black and white printing, film processing, print finishing and print presentation. Non-photo majors may take this course with the instructor's prior approval. DPH 125 BASIC PHOTOGRAPHY FOR GRAPHIC COMMUNICTATION and NON-MAJORS 3.00 This course is designed to teach Graphic Communication and other non-photo majors the basics of photography and how fundamental photographic knowledge can benefit them as working artists. A familiarization with a variety of photographic and darkroom techniques is introduced. Basic lighting solutions are discussed and demonstrated for photographing 2-D and 3-D portfolio pieces. DPH 151 BLACK AND WHITE PROCESSES 3.00 Emphasizes visual communication through photography. Assignments become more idea-oriented. Discussions examine the interrelationship of image, technique, and communication. DPH 155 DIGITAL IMAGING FOR PHOTOGRAPHERS 3.00 Students develop an understanding of digital photographic imaging and are presented with alternative methods of image development. DPH 209 INTERMEDIATE PHOTOGRAPHY- FINE ART METHODS AND CRITIQUE 3.00 This methods and critique course, in tandem with DPH210, Seminar AND Critique, is the first in a series to concentrate on personal fine art photography through assignments, advanced and alternative process demonstrations, discussions, field trips, guest artist, critiques, etc. The student is encouraged to explore and experiment with advanced technical image making methods. DPH 210 INTERMEDIATE PHOTOGRAPHY- FINE ART METHODS AND CRITIQUE 3.00 This seminar and critique course, in tandem with DPH209 Methods and Critique, is the first in a series to concentrate on personal fine art photography through assignments, readings and discussions, field trips, guest artists, critiques, etc. The student is encouraged to explore and experiment with advanced conceptual image making strategies. DPH 211 INTERMEDIATE PHOTOGRAPHY I AA LECTURE and STUDIO 3.00 This course addresses the fundamentals of applied art photography both within a studio context and on location. Students are introduced to the aesthetic, technical, and creative problem solving strategies, within an applied photography context. This is accomplished through intensive hands-on experience, the history of this photography genre, lectures, demonstrations, shooting assignments and critiques. DPH 214 COLOR THEORY AND PROCESSES I 3.00 A comprehensive study of both the aesthetics of color image making and the technical aspects of printing from color negative materials. A survey of the history of color photography and color theory are also a part of the course content. Included are slide lectures, assignments, lab and critiques. DPH 215 ALTERNATIVE PRINTING PROCESSES 3.00 Designed to extend the range of creative investigation using alternative photographic and non-silver processes to better express one's ideas and concepts. Processes covered include those which are the result of modern technology such as electrostatic and thermal printing, as well as some older processes such as gum bicromate and cyanotype. Elective Credit. DPH 216 PHOTOJOURNALISM 3.00 This specialized area of photography, which involves both newspaper and magazine images, is addressed through slide lectures, videos, demonstrations, critiques and field trips. This course begins a concentrated study of the genre through history, practice, and through self and instructor initiated assignments. Open to all majors. Elective Credit. DPH 217 SOCIAL DOCUMENTARY PHOTOGRAPHY 3.00 This long standing tradition within the medium is studied through the history of photography from its beginning to present day. This style of photography is examined from the objective photograph as document to contemporary uses of the straight photograph. An emphasis is placed on fine black and white printing and exposures technique. The archival printing process is also taught. DPH 221 PLATINUM/PALLADIUM PRINTING 3.00 The image produced by this non-silver technique has unparalleled beauty and offers infinite control over image characteristics. Also taught is the process of making enlarged negatives and highlight/shadow masks for a wide range of contact printing processes. Photo elective credit. DPH 225 PHOTO BOOK MAKING PROCESSES 3.00 Designed primarily for students concentrating in fine art photography. Students are introduced to the hand-made book and use book-making techniques in conjunction with personal concepts and imagery. Oriental fold, sewn binding, portfolio box construction, and book binding techniques are covered. Elective credit. DPH 251 INTERMEDIATE PHOTOGRAPHY II- AA LECtURE and STUDIO 3.00 A study in commercial illustrative photography both in the studio and on location. Includes perfecting view-camera techniques and further exploration of studio lighting techniques. Emphasis is on achieving a high level of technical, aesthetic and conceptual excellence. Students who do not have their own lab facilities should enroll in an DPH253 Intermediate Photography Lab II. DPH 254 COLOR THEORY and PROCESSES II 3.00 A comprehensive study of both the aesthetics of color image making as well as the technical aspects of color printing from color transparency and negative materials. Includes slide lectures, assignments, lab and critiques. Lab fee applies. DPH 310 INDEPENDENT STUDY 3.00 Junior and senior level students have an opportunity to work in an area or on a project that is not otherwise offered or addressed in the regular curriculum. The student must submit a written, detailed proposal to the department chair for approval. If approved, an instructor must agree to serve as advisor and to evaluate the student's work. The student must also commit to, and be responsible for, a formal meeting schedule. Since department chair approval is required, these arrangements must be made before the first day of class. Enrollment will not be granted after that time. DPH 311 ADVANCED PHOTOGRAPHY I AA -LECtURE and STUDIO 3.00 This course begins to place more emphasis on the historical and conceptual issues related to making images in a commercial context. Advanced creative problem solving strategies are introduced to foster consistency in terms of style, lighting, craft, camera, technique, etc. Three instructors teach (1) five-week segment each at a pace that is demanding and sequential. Lectures, studio and location demonstrations, shooting assignments and critiques are included. DPH 313 ADVANCED PHOTOGRAPHY FINE ART CONCEPTS and CRITIQUE 3.00 This course continues the student's concentrated study in fine art photography. A greater emphasis is placed on the development of a personal perspective and philosophy as it relates to the student's work. Through lectures, readings, discussions, field trips and guest artists, the student is encouraged to develop a greater understanding of the creative, conceptual and technical characteristics of their work and to place that work within a contemporary context. The readings will concentrate on Post Modernism and other contemporary movements in photography and art. DPH 317 ANALOG and DIGITAL VIDEO PRODUCTION 3.00 Through lectures, screenings, assigned projects and critiques, students learn about the technical aspect of video production while exploring the conceptual and aesthetic aspects of recorded time, motion and sound. Equipment is supplied by the College. DPH 321 BIO-MEDICAL PHOTOGRAPHY 3.00 A foundation course for students interested in biomedical photography or any student interested in the more intensely technical aspects of photography. Studies include theory and practice related to flat copy, specimen documentation, close-up macro, photo microscopy and other specialized photographic techniques. DPH 351 ADVANCED PHOTOGRAPHY II- AA LECTURE and STUDIO 3.00 This course continues to emphasize the historical and conceptual issues related to making images in a commercial context. Advanced creative problem solving strategies are introduced to foster consistency in terms of style, lighting, craft, camera technique etc. Three instructors each teach a five (5) week segment at a pace that is demanding and sequential. Lectures, studio and location demonstrations, shooting assignments and critiques are included. DPH 353 ADVANCED PHOTOGRAPHY FINE ART FORMS and CRITIQUE 3.00 This course continues the students development in personal fine art photography through lectures, field trips, guest artists, and critiques. An emphasis is placed on the development of a personal artistic language through the forms and concepts of their work. Students are encouraged to explore non-traditional approaches to photography. DPH 365 EXPLORING POLAROID PROCESSES 3.00 Students are introduced to the complete line of Polaroid materials. After being taught their characteristics and conventional use, students apply the process creatively. DPH 367 ADVANCED STUDIO PROJECTS 3.00 This course is for all junior and senior photography majors. It is primarily intended to broaden the student's capabilities through discussion and demonstrations of more sophisticated technical and conceptual problem solving assignments. Elective credit. DPH 371 BIO-MEDICAL PHOTOGRAPHY II 3.00 A continuation of DPH 321, Biomedical Photo I. DPH 409 PHOTOGRAPHY THESIS SEMINAR 3.00 This capstone course is intended to prepare senior students for successful participation as professionals in the commercial world. Tax laws, legal issues, business practices and protocol, copyright and intellectual property issues are thoroughly discussed. Whether establishing a studio freelance business, or seeking representation through a gallery, this course is essential! This course is also intended to support the production of the senior thesis paper. DPH 411 PHOTOGRAPHY THESIS PROJECT I AA/FA 3.00 In this capstone course students must demonstrate proficiency in their specific area of photography by producing a cohesive portfolio. Each student works under the guidance of their chosen mentor. A comprehensive description of the intended work schedule must be submitted and approved by the mentor and the department chair. It is the student's responsibility to adhere to the agreed upon work schedule and meet with his/her advisor on a regular bias and to attend all group meetings and seminars. If a darkroom is pertinent to the student's project, he/she must enroll in Advanced Photography Lab, DPH 315. DPH 416 ADVANCED PHOTOJOURNALISM 3.00 This continuation of Basic Photojournalism is designed to provide a deeper and broader experience in selected aspects of professional photojournalism. Elective Credit. DPH 451 PHOTOGRAPHY THESIS PROJECT II AA/FA 3.00 A continuation of DPH411 Photography Thesis Project I-AA. Students must demonstrate proficiency in a specific area of photography by producing a cohesive body of work. It is the student's responsibility to strictly adhere to the agreed upon work schedule and meet with his or her advisor on a regular basis and attend all group meetings and seminars which the advisor or department chair schedules. If a darkroom is pertinent to the student's project, he or she must enroll in an Advanced Photography Lab. DPH 475 INTERNSHIP 3.00 Participation in an internship experience allows students to utilize classroom learned skills in a related employment experience. Students are expected to work a minimum of nine hours per week. Students must register for the Internship class prior to the start of the Internship. Attendance at two Internship classes during your internship semester are required. See the Student Affairs office for more information. Students must be of junior or senior status with a minimum GPA of 2.5. Transfer students must also have attended CCS for one full semester. DPH 476 SENIOR BIOMEDICAL PHotography COOPerative 3.00 A cooperative program that is an arrangement for senior Bio- medical major to spend a portion of the semester working with a hospital or medical facility to obtain training and acquire experience in a broad scope of specialized medical photographic services. This arrangement must be made by, and have the approval of, both the Bio-medical instructor and the Photography Department chair. Details are determined on an individual basis and must be made far in advance of enrollment.
