DGC 233 INTRODUCTION TO ART DIRECTION 3.00 This course explores, on a basic level, the role and function of an art director in the preparation of an advertising message. It encompasses the various mediums available to an art director in addition to concept and salesmanship, as they apply to a given product or service. DGC 259 VISUALIZATION TECHNIQUES 3.00 This course deals intensively with technical issues aligned with visualization and construction. DGC 263 INTRODUCTION TO TIMEBASEd MEDIA 3.00 Projects introduce students to time-based visual communication environments. Unique conditions influencing the role of typography, image, symbolic systems, narrative, and sound and time systems are assessed in the resolution of assigned projects. DGC 264 INTRODUCTION TO INTERACTIVE MEDIA 3.00 Projects integrate time-based structures into active and passive communication systems. DGC 271 INTRODUCTION TO ILLUSTRATION 3.00 This course will explore techniques of interpreting verbal information by focusing on design, composition and color theory. DGC 276 INTRODUCTION TO VISUAL COMMUNICATIONS I 3.00 Projects explore audience, context, content, sequence, theories, philosophies, aesthetics, and techniques and cultural references in visual communication message building. The student's understanding of the diverse possibilities in professional practice through presentation, lecture and visitations will be developed. Appropriate tools and ideation methodologies will be introduced. 3.0 credits required for G.C. sophomores in the first semester of the sophomore year. DGC 277 INTRODUCTION TO VISUAL COMMUNICATIONS II 3.00 Projects develop skills aligned with the definition of need and assessment of appropriate communication systems. Instructional emphasis is placed on exploration, analysis, and the translation of ideas into intended message statements. Cognition and interpretation of messages and message environments condition the critical assessment of student response. The course will build the students' ideation methodology through process-based projects. 3.0 credits required in the second semester of the sophomore year for G.C. sophomores planning to major in Graphic Design. DGC 475 INTERNSHIP 3.00 Participation in an internship experience allows students to utilize classroom-learned skills in a related employment experience. Students are expected to work a minimum of nine hours per week and be must registered for the Internship class prior to the start of the Internship. Attendance at two Internship classes during the internship semester is required. Student should see the Student Affairs Office for more information. Students must be of Junior or Senior status with a minimum GPA of 2.50. Transfer students must also have attended CCS for one full semester.
ART DIRECTION DAD 353 COPYWRITING 3.00 Students are introduced to the fundamentals of writing advertising copy, which includes learning to think verbally and visually about the solution to a communications problem. This course will explore the various techniques available to a copywriter which will help achieve the advertising goals (as agreed on by the student and instructor) for the selected product or service. 3.0 credits required for Art Direction majors in the first or second semester of the junior year. DAD 363 VISUAL THINKING 3.00 Students are given realistic problems from the contemporary agency perspective. Ideas are refined and delineated through analysis of content, then executed in a variety of media. Single and multiple executions are brought to a visual form in keeping with agency expectations. 3.0 credits required for Art Direction majors in the first or second semester of the junior year. DAD 373 DIRECT MARKETING 3.00 This course will concentrate on the purpose, function, mediums and techniques of direct marketing- an advertising form that will assume increasing importance in an industry that demands a more precise measure of performance and effectiveness. 3.0 credits required for Art Direction majors in the first or second semester of the junior year. DAD 375 CORPORATE AND BUSINESS TO BUSINESS ADVERTISING 3.00 The first half of this course explores the purpose of corporate advertising and its role in creating or sustaining a positive consumer image. DAD 383 MARKETING FOR ART DIRECTORS 3.00 Trends in marketing, both in more traditional media and in new media brought about by rapid advances in computer technology, are examined. DAD 451 CAMPAIGN DEVELOPMENT 3.00 In this capstone course campaigns are developed with an overview of all aspects of advertising as they relate to various media and the communications goal to be achieved. 3.0 credits required for Art Direction majors in the first and second semesters of the senior year. DAD 453 COPYWRITING II 3.00 This course builds on Copywriting I, extending writing skills into broadcast media such as television and radio. DAD 454 COPYWRITING III 3.00 Copywriting III is essentially the fine-tuning of skills learned in Copywriting I & II. It involves integrating all mediums into a cohesive whole. Emphasis will be placed on CONTENT (the underlying thought that provides the criterion and stimulus for form), CONTEXT (the environment, cultural or physical, in which a message or form is perceived and by which it is conditioned), and CONCEPT (the structuring of a relationship among forms and messages to achieve a specific expression within a given context). The student is expected to respond to assignments in a mature and thorough manner. ILLUSTRATION DIL 311 ILLUSTRATING WITH TRANSPARENT MEDIUMS 3.00 This course, which explores techniques of illustration using transparent dyes and watercolors, teaches methods peculiar to transparent illustration in handling color, washes, and brush techniques. Students are encouraged to experiment with different grounds and boards. The styles and techniques of professional illustrators working in transparent mediums are studied. Assignments include figure, product, editorial, and fashion illustration. 3.0 credits applicable for Illustration majors pursuing the Traditional Elective Option. DIL 315 CHARACTER REFERENCED COSTUMED FIGURE 3.00 Using photographic skills, costumed models and professional reference-gathering techniques, students will execute finished illustrations and painting assignments. 3.0 credits applicable for Illustration majors pursuing the Traditional Elective Option. DIL 324 DIGITAL ILLUSTRATION II 3.00 This course will provide students a continued opportunity to expand their creative capabilities using the application Fractual Painter. This software will enable students to explore every drawing style. With Wacom tablets and advanced work stations, brush and surface variations will be explored. Students will produce both simple and complex illustrations. 3.0 credits required for Illustration majors pursuing the Digital Elective Option. May be taken concurrently with DIL 321 Digital Illustration I. DIL 341 ADVANCED FIGURE ILLUSTRATION PAINTING 3.00 This course deals with the refining of acquired skills through direct painting from the models in various media. Light, color, form and their relationships as a basis for contemporary illustration are examined. 3.0 credits required for Illustration majors in the first semester of the junior year. DIL 347 ANIMATION DRAWING 3.00 Students will learn to see, analyze, and sketch images from the perspective of visual storytelling by capturing the essence of mood, movement, attitude and drama in expressive line, shadow and tone. Subjects range from the human form to animals, landscapes and objects. Various media will be explored. 3.0 credits required for Illustration majors pursing the Animation Elective Option. 3.0 credits applicable for students pursuing the traditional elective option. DIL 348 HEAD DRaWing AND PORTRAIT PAINTING 3.00 Fundamentals and construction, as well as likeness and rendering will be covered in the drawing portion of this class. Color, mood, form, and technique will be emphasized in the painting portion. Materials used will include graphite, charcoal, prismacolor, pastels, markers, gouache, acrylics, and oils. Outside assignments will concentrate on expressions, caricature, formal portraiture, and advertising applications. 3.0 credits applicable for Illustration majors pursuing the Traditional Elective Option. DIL 349 ANIMATION ENVIRONMENTS 3.00 Students will learn to develop environments which exist in place and time. Projects will explore visual translations of invented environments, defined by perspective, and an understanding of form in dimensional environments. DIL 351 ADVERTISING ILLUSTRATION 3.00 This class will focus on the creation of illustration projects used for advertising and promotional purposes. Appropriate techniques and media will be covered and may include airbrush, magic marker, acrylics, etc. The concepts and purpose of advertising, as well as the artist-client-consumer relationship, will be discussed. 3.0 credits applicable for Illustration majors pursuing the Traditional Elective Option. DIL 362 BOOK ILLUSTRATION 3.00 Students are introduced to the riches of book illustration, from the past to the present. The styles and techniques of the world's most significant book illustrators in children's books, poetry, and the novel, are surveyed. Assignments consist of creating new, exciting book covers and text illustrations for existing books, fairytales, fables, short stories, etc. Students are free to illustrate stories of their own for one of the assignments. 3.0 credits applicable for Illustration majors pursuing the Traditional Elective Option. DIL 364 ENTERTAINMENT ILLUSTRATION 3.00 Students will select three or four areas of interest such as film, theatre, and other numerous forms of entertainment. Assignments which will focus on these areas, will include matte art, storyboards, set design, animation, poster art, production design, model making, etc. 3.0 credits applicable for Illustration majors pursuing the Traditional Elective Option. DIL 381 ILLUSTRATION I 3.00 Exploring the transition from student to professional, this course will stress approach as well as concepts in illustration. The emphasis will be on mixed media, oils, pastels, dyes and other methods of creating visual imagery in less academically traditional styles. 3.0 credits required for Illustration majors in the first semester of the junior year. DIL 382 ILLUSTRATION II 3.00 This course will focus on contemporary illustration in relation to composition, design, and color. Assignments will be directly related to today's illustration field. 3.0 credits required for Illustration majors in the second semester of the junior year. DIL 410 EDITORIAL ILLUSTRATION 3.00 A broader concept calling for modes of expression and aesthetic choices that fall within the purviews of magazine and story illustration in the search for viewer response is explored, with emphasis on creative and unusual solutions. 3.0 credits applicable for Illustration majors pursuing the Traditional Elective Option. DIL 447 ANIMATION NARRATIVE 3.00 Students will develop their ability to communicate complex messages using images, environments and supporting visual components that translate events into narrative animation structures. The development of storyboards and the role of sound will be important themes. 3.0 credits required for Illustration majors pursuing the Animation Elective Option. DIL 448 TIME-BASEd ANIMATION 3.00 Students will develop time-based animations which integrate character development, invented environments, and clear narrative structures into time-based animation sequences. The use of various software and hardware appropriate to the translation of concepts in motion studies will be integrated into the course. 3.0 credits required for Illustration majors pursuing the animation elective option. DIL 458 PORTFOLIO PRESENTATION 3.00 This capstone course will focus on the review, analysis, preparation and/or improvement of graduate portfolios. Students are also prepared for the necessary selling of themselves to the business and art communities. Artwork and/or writing (other than the capstone paper) done for the class is for the promotion of the individual. Class also meets on Wednesday evenings at the instructor's studio. 3.0 credits required for Illustration majors in the first or second semester of the senior year. DIL 481 ILLUSTRATION III 3.00 An application of innovative and non-traditional techniques is applied to the problems of the creative image visuals. Both 2-D and 3-D solutions are sought, with the use of unusual material stressed. 3.0 credits required for Illustration majors in the first semester of the senior year. DIL 482 ILLUSTRATION IV 3.00 Assignments
will emphasize individual interests. Visiting creative directors and
representatives will oversee and critique assignments. Students will
