INTRODUCTION TO FINE ARTS  3.00

This course serves as an introduction to the disciplines of sculpture and painting. Students will focus on the development of observational skills and an understanding of the techniques and materials employed in both sculpture and painting. Open to non-majors for elective credit.

BASIC PAINTING  3.00

Students explore the materials and techniques of oil and acrylic painting. Emphasis is placed on developing observational skills, color mixing and compositional relationships.

BASIC SCULPTURE  3.00

Students research and explore sculptural methods and materials in regards to their historical and contemporary employment. Encourages artistic growth, thought and exploration of both non-representational and figurative methods as well as the systematic study of their uses and meaning.

ANATOMY  3.00

This class explores the figure based on a workable understanding of human anatomy. Students learn from lecture, demonstration, the model, and charts how the skeletal and muscle structures influence surface form.

DRAWING III - FIGURATIVE  3.00

Methods derived from traditional principles for drawing the complete human figure are explored with emphasis on perspective, structureand proportion.

INTERMEDIATE PAINTING I  3.00

A figure class which emphasizes painting principles. Painting techniques, values, light and shadow, illusion of form and space, compositional theory, color effectiveness and color analysis are covered.

INTERMEDIATE PAINTING II  3.00

Students are introduced to the nature of expression and encouraged to explore personal vision through the painting principles and techniques acquired in Basic and Figure Painting.

INTERMEDIATE SCULPTURE II  3.00

Involves a systematic study of the figure and the origin of the figure form. Special emphasis is placed on the study of anatomical structure and the tensions that animate form. Traditional clay modeling practices are employed.

INTERMEDIATE SCULPTURE I  3.00

Encourages sculptural exploration through subtractive and additive pursuits in metal, stone, and wood. Students learn through investigation and mastery of techniques that are integral to making and understanding sculpture: carving, casing, and assembly of steel, plaster, stone, cement and wood.

PRINTMAKING - (LITHO)  3.00

Provides the needed specialized expertise to utilize and explore the full scope of lithography, a versatile drawing/painting print medium. Metal plate, stone, transfer, and photo-lithography are covered in depth to produce single and multi-color limited edition lithographs.

DFA 255 
PRINTMAKING -INTAGLIO  3.00

Explores the full diversity of the intaglio process which utilizes recessed marks as the image-making vehicle. Comprises the full range of etching processes, engraving and drypoint, collographs, metal collage, and photo-aided etchings in adequate depth to sustain the production of single and multi-color, limited-edition intaglios.

ADVANCED FIGURE DRAWING  3.00

Continues exploration of the figure begun in the anatomy and figure drawing classes with emphasis on complex problem solving, including extended value studies, the figure in environment, the use of multiple figures and the use of figures on a large scale. A variety of drawing mediums are used.

WELDING  3.00

Stresses welding skills through the use of metal-working equipment. Special attention is given to the problem of metal fabrication as needed in non fine arts fields. Students are encouraged to apply skills taught in their individual disciplines. Fine Arts majors may only use this class for elective credit.

INTERMEDIATE SCULPTURE - CASTING  3.00

Investigates the interrelationship of process, creativity, and concept through various casting techniques. Bronze, iron, aluminum, and cement as well as non-traditional materials are utilized to explore casting as process as well as a means to a product.

ADVANCED PRINTMAKING  3.00

The diverse possibilities by the medium of lithography and/or intaglio as an expressive art form serve as a focal point for augmenting the extensive primary skills already acquired. As the scope of artistic development and sensibility matures, instruction becomes increasingly individualized.

ADVANCED PAINTING  3.00

This course addresses advanced painting problems covering representational and non-representational issues. A broad range of painting materials and techniques will be explored. Instruction will be geared toward the individual artistic development of the student.

DFA 349 
PAPERMAKING  3.00

An introduction to papermaking in its various forms. Students take paper from its many possible raw ingredients to pulp to sheet formation, all within its standards of archival longevity. After basic skills are developed, experimental approaches in sizing, coloring, material, and construction are encouraged.

ADVANCED DRAWING IV  3.00

Offers students the opportunity to investigate drawing as an alternative and independent process of art-making. Students develop a personal vocabulary through self-directed works, and instruction is individualized to these specific inquiries. A broad range of media and methods are examined as well as the historical context for drawing through demonstrations, assigned readings, and class discussions.

ADVANCED SCULPTURE  3.00

This course will explore advanced sculptural issues and utilize a broad range of materials and processes. Personal vision will be encouraged and instruction will be geared toward the individual artistic development of the student.

CONCEPTS AND IMAGES  3.00

Designed as a pre-studio tutorial course, this class helps students set up their own problems and direct their solutions. Focuses on philosophy and personality of the individual within the context of the larger art world. All media. Restricted to Fine Arts majors only.

DFA 400 
FINE ARTS SEMINAR  3.00

The Fine Arts Seminar, together with the Studio Tutorial, serves as the final capstone course. This class explores critical, aesthetic, theoretical, and practical topics essential to the emergence of a professional studio artist. Self directed historical research presentations, written topical assignments, personal artist statements, along with professional business and legal workshops, contribute to the final graduation thesis and a completed personal assessment.

STUDIO TUTORIAL  6.00

The Studio Tutorial Program is a capstone course that integrates the student's individual inquiries into a collaborative learning experience. Students are assigned private or semi-private studio space and a team of instructors review student work on a weekly basis. Two formal group critiques are scheduled each semester in which students learn to substantiate their work and express their ideas verbally. All students are required to complete a written thesis accompanied by a slide portfolio of 10 pieces and participate in the senior exhibition. Restricted to Fine Art majors.

INTERNSHIP/APPRENTICESHIP  3.00

Participation in an internship experience allows students to utilize classroom learned skills in a related employment experience. Students are expected to work a minimum of nine hours per week. Students must register for the Internship class prior to the start of the Internship. Attendance at two internship classes during your Internship semester are REQUIRED. See Erin Kearns in Student Affairs for more information. Prerequisite: Junior and Senior status, GPA minimum of 2.50. Transfer students must also have attended CCS for one full semester.

An introductory course on drawing. Students are introduced to fundamental drawing issues including: line and value in composition, elementary perspective, and preliminary training of the eye.

This course builds on skills and concepts from Foundation Drawing I. Central ideas taught in the second semester focus on Figure Drawing, as well as more complex rendering and pictorial drawing issues.
